I like to have the occasional drink just as much as the next gal. In fact, I searched hi and low for a cute little flask that would fit into my garter belt for my wedding day just so I could hold true the “something borrowed; something blue . . . ” sentiment. There’s something about a flask that says “old school” and “trend” to me at the same time. So when I had the opportunity to learn how to make one from leather, I jumped.
Tony had a class on the proper tooling & assembly of a leather flask. The Celtic design was standard for everyone in the class and I actually took the chance to practice the way I approach a carving (slowly). After tooling in the Celtic knot, we got to color/stain our leather and of course I had to go for some color. And since I didn’t use any initials, I needed a little something in the center. I went for a small aluminum stud for the accent and color and am pretty happy with the turnout.
The tooling and stitching was relatively easy. It was the actual assembly of getting the leather onto the flask that was a PITA. Because Leather has a memory, you don’t want to stretch it too far (it’ll stay that way) and you don’t want to create any wrinkles trying to slide the sleeve on because those’ll stick around forever, too. And before you ask, no, you can’t stitch the leather onto the flask because then the knot will be on the outside.
All in all, I’m pretty happy with the result. The colors look good, the stud looks good and the stitches on the back look pretty darn good, too. What do you think? Want one?
